Burstner Owners Club rally to Spain and Portugal 2027

Begin your journey along the stunning northern coast of Spain before heading south for a 2 night stay in the beautiful, historic city of Santiago de Compostela where a guided walking tour introduces you to its rich heritage, lively atmosphere, and iconic pilgrimage routes. Next you will continue to the west coast for a 4 night stay near the town of Baiona where you can relax by the sea and indulge in local cuisine.

The journey continues into Portugal where you settle into a relaxed rhythm combining free time for independent exploring with carefully chosen excursions that showcase Portugal’s rich landscapes, historic cities, and culture. 

Highlights begin in the north with Porto, with a guided city walk, Douro River cruise, and port wine cellar that will bring the city’s heritage to life, followed by Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. The journey continues south to the Lisbon region, visiting fairy tale Sintra, the elegant seaside town of Cascais, and Lisbon’s historic Belém, with time to explore the capital at leisure, before finishing along the dramatic southern coast of the Algarve with its rugged cliffs of Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente.

Note. Some campsites have been selected for their location and may be more basic and ‘no frills’  than others.

Itinerary

04 May - 07 May: Caravanning Oyambre (3 nights)
E27 Caravaning Oyambre 13 1980

A first-class campsite set in a National Park, this is the perfect place to kick off the rally. Located close to the ports of Santander (44 minutes) and Bilbao (1 hr 44 mins). The site has excellent facilities, and the beach is just a 15-minute walk away. The local town is 4km away, not accessible by foot, but a comfortable 15 minutes on a bike. You will find a restaurant, bar, and outdoor pool with sun loungers and inside pool amongst the facilities on site.

4 May
Welcome meal in the campsite restaurant. 

5 May
Excursion to Comillas

Take a private bus transfer to the picturesque coastal town of Comillas. Firstly, you will visit the Sobrellanos Palace, a 19th Neo Gothic complete with a grand central staircase, opulent interiors, and beautiful stained glass. During your visit, you will have a 45-minute private tour followed by free time to explore at your own pace. When you are ready to leave, wander into the centre of Comilla (a 10-minute walk) for free time and some lunch.

During the afternoon, make your way to El Capricho, otherwise known as ‘Gaudis House’ (a 5-minute walk from the centre), where you will meet a guide for a 45-minute private tour including the striking tower and colourful ceramic tiles.  Following your visit, the private bus will return you to the campsite.

07 May - 09 May: Camping Playa de Tapia (2 nights)
Camping playa de tapia

A pleasant seaside campsite with direct access to a sandy beach and walking distance (20 minutes) to the nearby town of Tapia de Casariego, where you will find a lovely harbour, shops, and restaurants. On-site, there is a pizzeria and fresh baked bread that can be ordered for the morning.

09 May - 11 May: Camping As Cancelas (2 nights)

This is a basic, no-frills campsite chosen for its location. The campsite is within walking distance of the town of Santiago de Compostela (30-minute walk), with a bus stop nearby.

10 May
Excursion to Santiago de Compostela

Walk into Santiago de Compostela at your own pace and meet a local guide for a 2-hour walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage historic city.  Santiago de Compostela is a compact city that combines spiritual pilgrimage, medieval architecture, and vibrant Galician culture with wonderful narrow cobbled streets, hidden squares, and lively tapas bars. 

Following your tour, spend the afternoon wandering at your own pace, making your way back to the campsite when you are ready.

11 May - 15 May: Bayona playa (4 nights)
Camping baiona aereas 0016 1980

Following a couple of 2-night stays, settle into this campsite for 4 nights and unwind for your last nights in Spain.  The campsite is located right next to the long sandy beach of the Riaz Baixas with panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding bay. Described as the paradise of the Galician Coast beach, so you can indulge in some paddle boarding, swimming and beach days, or venture to the local towns of Sabaris & Baiona (40 minutes stroll) where there are plenty of restaurants. 

The campsite has good facilities and a nice restaurant with traditional Galician and Spanish dishes.

11 May
On your first evening, enjoy an arranged group meal in the campsite restaurant.

12 May
A free day, why not take a 30/40-minute stroll into the medieval fishing town of Baiona, famous for its Montrerreal castle and the Caravel Pinta Museum.

15 May
Today, you leave the campsite in Spain and travel 149 km across the border into Portugal, arriving at your next campsite in Porto.

15 May - 18 May: Orbitur Canidelo (Vila Nova de Gaia) (3 nights)
Orbitur Canidelo

This campsite is located directly across from the Atlantic coast and promenade with restaurants, beach bars and a cycle path into Porto or 50 minutes on a public bus. The location is excellent however the campsite needs an update, and has basic sanitary facilities. You may find some pitches sloping and narrow.

16 May 
Excursion to Porto

Leave the campsite by private bus and travel to the vibrant town of Porto where you will meet your guide for a short walking tour. Following your tour, you will board a traditional wooden Rabelo boat for a 50-minute cruise taking you beneath six historic bridges linking Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, along the Douro River. The traditional boats were originally used to transport port wine barrels from the Douro to the region of Porto.

After the cruise, there will be free time for lunch. The afternoon continues with a visit to Burmester’s Wine Cellars, including a port tasting, before coach collection and return to the campsite.

18 May - 20 May: Coimbra Camping and Bungalows (2 nights)
Coimbra Campsite

A basic, spacious campsite with a good bar and restaurant on site. You will find helpful and cheerful staff, and basic sanitary facilities. The campsite has access to public transport outside the campsite, which takes you directly into the town. Or an easy cycle ride should you prefer.

19 May 
Excursion to Coimbra town and the university

This morning, you depart from the site by private bus and travel into the town of Coimbra, the former capital and currently the 15 UNESCO World Heritage Site in Portugal. 

You will first visit the oldest and largest universities in Europe, including the stunning Joanina Library and the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Following the university, you will have free time to explore the city further and have lunch at your leisure.

Note: Coimbra has a very hilly terrain, and may be a challenge for some with mobility issues.

20 May - 23 May: Lisboa Camping & Bungalows (3 nights)
Lisboa camping bungalows

Lisboa Camping offers one of the few camping options near Lisbon, making it a practical choice if you want easy access to the city by public transport (the bus stop is just outside the site). The facilities are dated and in need of renovation, especially the sanitary blocks, and there may be road noise. However, the pitches are spacious with electricity and water, and the location is excellent, with a bus stop 450m outside the campsite.

21 May
Excursion to Sintra and Cascais

Today’s excursion starts in the charming Portuguese town of Sintra where you will visit the vividly, colourful ‘Palacio Nacional da Pena’ and embark on a guided tour. You will then continue into Sintra for free time to enjoy some coffee and lunch. 

Next, you continue with a brief stop at Quinta da Regaleira, allowing you to admire the enchanting turrets while the guide shares fascinating legends of the estate, before travelling to the seaside town of Cascais.

On arrival in Cascais you will start with a sightseeing tour highlighting the citadel, fishing port and Boca do Inferno, before disembarking the coach for some free time before you return to the campsite.

22 May
Excursion to Belem and Lisbon

Today you depart the campsite by private bus and travel to Belém, where you will visit the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. The coach will also be available between the two sites to avoid the 20-minute walk. After visiting the tower, you have free time to enjoy a coffee and sample the famous Portuguese custard tart. 

Onward travel into Lisbon for free time to explore, have lunch, shop, or visit the cathedral and castle, before being collected by coach and returning to the campsite.

23 Mar - 27 Mar: Camping Turiscampo (4 nights)

This is a large quality campsite, with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, and excellent facilities, including 2 good restaurants. The town of Lagos is a 15-minute drive away, or a quick Uber. The campsite is also within walking distance to a village (30-40 minutes)

 

4 May 

Excursion to Sagres and Cabo de Sao Vincente

The day begins at Ponta de Piedade, where you can enjoy panoramic views from the cliffs and a gentle stroll along the boardwalks. Following a short time at the viewpoint, the group will rejoin the bus for a scenic coastal drive to Sagres Fortress, where you can explore the historic ramparts and take in views of the dramatic coastline.  

Next, you will be taken to Sagres town, with free time to explore its charming streets and enjoy lunch (excluded). Afterwards, the coach continues to Cabo de São Vicente, with the opportunity to explore the lighthouse, including its interior and visitor centre, before returning to the campsite.

Brittany Ferries will release their fares and timetables in July. Based on 2026 timetables, we can provide the following route. If the timetable differs in 2027, we will provide the ferry crossing that dovetails the rally dates.

Plymouth Santander departs 03/05/27 (16:45) arrives 04/05 (15:15)

Portsmouth to Bilbao departs 05/06/27 (18:00), arrives 06/06 (13:00)

Optional Extras

The way home – Optional extra

Following the rally, participants have the opportunity to reserve a place on the optional extension from Turiscampo in the Algarve to Santander in Northern Spain.

Turiscampo to Camping el Madronal - 290km (approximately 3.15 hours’ drive) 
Camping el Madronal to Camping Caceres – 247 km (Approximately 3 hours)  
Camping Caceres to Salamanca- 201km (approximately 2.5 hours) 
Salamanca to El Astral - 87 km (approximately 1 hour)
El Astral to Santander- 276 km (approximately 3 hours)

27 May - 2 nights
Camping el Madronal 

A campsite in the heart of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche National Park, with 2 swimming pools, and a restaurant serving local cuisine.

The village of Fuenteheridos is within walking distance, and further afield (approximately 8 km) you can visit La Gruta de la Maravillas, the ‘Cave of Wonders’, a spectacular cave system with underground lakes and formations.

Note that there is a bus around 2 km away however, it is not reliable.  Otherwise, we recommend a taxi to visit the area.

29 May - 2 nights
Camping Caceres 

A lovely, small campsite just west of the town of Caceres, a World Heritage site. The campsite has a good range of facilities, including a bar, restaurant and pool. 

There is a bus stop 1.4km from the campsite (about a 20-minute walk), and a further 40 minutes on the bus.  Alternatively, a taxi will take about 15 minutes to the centre of Caceres.

31 May - 2 nights
Camping Regio, Salamanca

Camping Regio is located just outside the beautiful historic city of Salamanca.  The campsite is part of a hotel complex and just 4km from the city with good-sized pitches.  

You will find a bar and restaurant on site, a bus stop outside the campsite and a Lidl 15 minutes' walk away.

2 June – 3 nights
Camping El Astral

Although this campsite is just over one hour away from Salamanca, it’s a good location for the final journey to Santander.

The campsite is family-run, well-equipped, well equipped and set in a lovely location against the River Duero. The town of Tordesillas is also within walking distance, and a visit to the Real Monasterio de Santa Clara or ‘the little Alhambra’ is highly recommended.

£995 per person plus ferry crossing. Fares for 2027 will be released in July.

Prices for single travellers are available on request.

 

Please note: the prices are estimates based on 2026 costs. We do not expect it to increase, but if there are any significant changes once 2027 costs are confirmed, we will let you know by the end of September.  Minimum numbers must be met.

 

Dogs

Dogs are welcome however, they are not permitted on the excursions, therefore 1 person must remain behind with the dog. A discount will be applied to the person not participating in the excursion, provided the group's minimum numbers have been met.

The exceptions are the following excursions:

  • Compostela de Santiago – you walk to the town from the campsite.
  • Coimbra. Make your own way into Coimbra by public transport. Dogs are allowed in the grounds and in the botanical gardens, but not inside the Joanina Library.

Dogs are also not allowed in the restaurants during the evening meals, but can be left unattended if secure in your motorhome.

Campsite supplements for dogs must be paid for locally.

 

Concessions

The rally lead will not receive any concessions during this tour.

 

On The Way Home – Optional Extension

How to book your place

  • To confirm your place on the rally, we require a completed booking form and a deposit of £500.
  • Rally: £250 per person, non-refundable Deposit
  • Ferry crossing: £25 per person*
  • On the way Home:  £25 per person**
  • There are 20 places available to book on a first come first served basis.  Bookings close on Monday, 4 January 2027.
  • No early arrivals are possible at the first campsite due to the campsite being fully booked for the bank holiday weekend.

*A further 30% deposit will be required when your ferry crossing is confirmed.  We will be unable to provide a quotation for the ferries until they are released in July. Once your ferry is confirmed, a 30% deposit (minus the £50 pre-paid deposit) will be required
